David Lee Mumford from the Bronx New York hasn't called, text, emailed, sent a letter to his 4 year old son. The last time he contacted his son was March 2008! His son ask for his father each night and includes him in his prayers. He ask his mother, auntie and grandmother why his father doesn't come to see him. He ask his family where his daddy is every single day. His father just dropped out of plain sight for no reason. There was no problem between his mother he just left and never came back to see his son again. All David's friends and family still see him in the neighborhood right around the block where his son lives but yet he refuses to come and visit. If you see this man (boy) please let him know there is an adorable little boy that misses him and longs for his father each and everyday. Let him know that there is nothing worst than a dead beat dad and he should be ashamed of himself.

I know. I know. I'm late on this, but for those of you who don't know Doom's new album, Born like this, dropped March 24th and it is sick. I'm too lazy to write about it so I stole an article from Rolling Stone's writer David Downs. Oh yeah, and you can listen to the album at the end of this blog

American underground rap iconoclast Doom (formerly MF Doom) releases his new album Born Like This. on Lex Records tomorrow, March 24th. The U.K.-born, New York-raised rapper’s LP features contributions from Ghostface Killah, Raekwon and the beats of late production genius J Dilla, and represents seven years of work recorded on and off at home in Atlanta. Thom Yorke recently remixed sexy single “Gazillion Ear” and funky, Jake One-produced “Ballskin” is bouncing across the major music blogs. The centerpiece of the record is “Cellz”, which explodes with apocalyptic fury. On it, the late, great American poet Charles Bukowski reads of one of his best poems, “Dinosauria, We,” for almost two minutes while missiles fire and the Earth is laid to waste.

“Don’t freak with old Buke. Buke is nice. He’s as good as the rest of the rappers on there,” Doom says. “He kind of sets the tone for the record, being that we’re living in what he was kind of describing. He might’ve been reaching for the worst description based on what he saw us heading to, but it happened and that made me go, ‘Wow, that’s ill. Kinda prophetic words.’ ”

With a career modeled on the Marvel comics arch-villain Doctor Doom, the metal mask-wearing fortysomething remains characteristically cryptic about future live dates. “I tell you one thing: when you come to a Doom show, come expecting to hear music, don’t come expecting to see. You never know who you might see. It has nothing to do with a visual thing. Use your mind and think. I might be there. Next time I do a show, I might tell everybody to close they eyes. Use your own mind’s eye. That’s better than a camera phone, know what I’m sayin’?’ ”

He says Michael Jackson — who just sold out 50 shows in the U.K. — might be doing the same thing. “Word. That nigga was crazy as hell. How do you even know he’s still him? He might’ve been doing the technique.”

The Doom live experience caused controversy in 2007, when the highly acclaimed lyricist behind Madvillainy and The Mouse and the Mask allegedly sent an impostor to perform several of his dates in Los Angeles and San Francisco. Furious crowds booed and took their rage to the Internet, reporting that the impostor lip-synced to MF Doom’s songs. Self-proclaimed super-villain Doom posted no response to his fan’s rage until now, when he tells Rolling Stone that he couldn’t care less.

“Everything that we do is villain style,” Doom says. “Everybody has the right to get it or not get it. Once I throw it out, it’s there for interpretation. It might’ve seemed like it didn’t go well, but how do we know that wasn’t just pre-orchestrated so that we’re talking about it now? I tell you one thing: People are asking more now for live shows and I’m charging more, so it must’ve worked somewhere.”

Such weirdness is par for the course for the erratic artist, born Daniel Dumile. In the late ’80s, Dumile signed to major label Elektra with his sibling. But his brother was killed in a car accident, Elektra dropped him, and Dumile vanished.

In the late ’90s, a metal-faced rapper spitting inimitable flow on debut underground LP Operation: Doomsday materialized named MF Doom. More than a dozen LPs and two dozen EPs later, Born Like This. is highly anticipated hip-hop eclecticism; a follow-up to 2004’s widely lauded Madvilliany with producer Madlib and 2005’s The Mouse and the Mask with platinum producer Danger Mouse. Those hits cracked the Billboard 200 — commercially and critically validating Dumile’s brutal, funny, literate, street style.

Lasering in on Armageddon on his new disc puts Doom smack in the middle of a morbid trend, with the Dow melting away, Watchmen blowing up the box office and the globe warming. But the ending of “Dinosauria, We” also posits a beautiful new beginning, begging the question: is the apocalypse actually cleansing?

“No doubt,” says the father and admitted McCain voter. “If something ends, then something’s gonna start. So it’s like, what side are you on? Do you feel like your world is ending? Or do you feel like, ‘Wow, it seems like that’s ending and it’s the start of something new.’”

Born Like This. is about the next chapter, he says and more is coming. “I got a hundred albums in me. I’m gonna rock this shit forever.

One lovely evening my homie Gio hits me up to come with him to this bar/lounge spot his peoples are DJing at. I'm always down to get shit faced so why not. When we get there it's totally not our scene (it was a weekend and every dude there had on an argyle v-neck sweater with a button-up shirt under it, dress pants, and shoes. Literally every dude), but fuck it. When free drinks are involved any scene is my scene. So my homie gets some drink tickets and we go to the bar and get semi-shit faced. When the drink tickets run out my homie buys us two Corona's from the bar. We finish our Corona's, throw up the deuces and peace the fuck out.
When we leave that spot we go over to the Smiths party, but that shit was super packed so we didn't even go in. We did run into our homegirl Puja though and she's like "fuck this shit. Let's go back to where y'all just came from". So we hop in a cab and go back.

Allow me to preface this next part of the story by stating that me and my homie are young and grimey (fuck grown and sexy) scumbags. Scumbags in a sense that we hate buying drinks at the bar so we sneak our own drinks in. Don't judge! It's a recession bitches!

On the way back me and Gio tell the cab to drop us off at the bodega, which is a block away from the bar. We both cop two Corona's each and stuff them in our coats.

We get into the spot with our Corona's with no problem. We go down stairs and I hit the little boys room. When I come out I find Gio sipping on his smuggled in beer. Like a russian spy I pass my Corona to Gio incognito style and ask him to pop the cap for me. He takes the bottle, places the edge of the cap on the edge of a table and proceeds by slamming his hand down on the bottle. He succeds and the blue and gold cap goes flying in the air. As if it were planned, as soon as the bottle cap hits the ground we hear someone yell behind us. "Y'all gotta get the fuck out!" We look behind us and it's the barback with an angry snarl on his face. He rushes towards us with his hand pointing toward the ceiling "y'all have to get out. Get the fuck out now!" We look at the barback with a grin on our faces and simultaneously say "nah, we're good!" Which pisses the barback off even more. Then we ask him "why do we have to get out?" The barback continues to yell "y'all didn't buy those drinks from here. Y'all have to get the fuck out." At this point the barback tries to grab my homie by the arm and drag him out. I push the barback off my homie "yo get the fuck off him. You can't physically touch him. Your not a bouncer." The barback runs off towards the stairs. At this point Puja embarrassedly comes over to us and says "what the fuck dude!" And walks away.

The barback comes back downstairs accompanied by the bouncer. The bouncer calmly asks us what was going on. My homie pulls out the receipt he got from the corona's he purchased from the bar about an hour ago. The bouncer takes a look at the receipt (but he didn't look at the time of purchase) and told the barback we were cool and we didn't have to leave. The bouncer handed gio back the receipt. The barback snatches the receipt from gio's hand, crumples it up, and throws it on the floor. He storms off again and me and Gio begin to laugh hysterically. This time the barback returns with the owner of the bar. The barback is screaming at the top of his lungs about how we brought in our own beers and he caught us opening them and how we refuse to leave. We tried to deny the alligations but the owner wasn't trying to hear it. He didn't care. He just wanted us to leave. Gio says to the owner "I'm not leaving till I finish my beer." We finish our beers while the owner of the bar is standing there like a herb and he escorts us out. We give a pound to the bouncer and we blow that joint laughing all the way home. What fucking losers we are!!!

Rafael Rios Interview

While Obama is doing all he can to get us out of this economic crisis, dudes still need two jobs just to make ends meet. Ask Rafael Rios. He’s a photographer and a photographer’s assistant. I caught up with him in between shifts to talk to him about birthday cakes, self-publishing, and Walrus dildos.

Dweeb: So I’m basically winging this. I thought of the questions at like four this morning.

Rafael: You don’t sleep?

D: Nah son! No sleep! So when did you get into photography?

R: Probably like in the 10th grade. I had a photo class in high school.

D: and from there you were just like “fuck it! This is what I want to do.”?

R: Well I just like printed then. Then senior year it was time to apply to college. I was gonna go to culinary school. I was vegan at the time and I was like “I’m never gonna get a job. Then I realized I spent all my time in the dark room so I was just like “maybe I’ll go to school for photography. So I applied to all these colleges…two of them. Got into both and I went to SVA. Then I transferred after one-year cause I was like there is no point in spending $100,000 to take pictures. It’s not like I was gonna be a doctor or a dentist. So then I transferred to hunter.

D: Sweet! Who are some of your favorite photographers?

R: I have a bunch. Right now it’s this Czech photographer Iren Stehli who’s really good. He did this book on this gypsy in Prague in the Czech Republic and pretty much just documented her whole life, which was pretty amazing. Then there’s Nigel Schaffen who is pretty good.

D: Who are some photographers that you hate?

R: HATE?

D: Yeah. Who do you think just really sucks.

R: I don’t know. I just ignore them. I don’t waste my time. But there is definitely a lot of bad photography. Like fashion photography. That fucking jump photo, I can’t stand it. How many times are you gonna make that lady jump.

D: (laughs) What’s your favorite type of pics to take?

R: I honestly just like taking pictures. I’ll shoot anything. It doesn’t really matter. I just like pressing the button and pretending I’m doing something.

D: I saw on your site you had a lot of portrait pics. Those were dope!

R: Oh thank you! Yeah I did that cause I’m trying to get into editorial photography. So I can start actually making money instead of taking pictures of birthday cakes. I am going to make a birthday cake calendar though.

D: That’ll be dope!

R: 12 months of cake. I like doing documentary photography. I do like fashion photography. There’s a lot of good fashion photography when it’s done well.

D: What’s your inspiration?

R: I look at a lot of photography. I look at paintings. T.V., movies. Everywhere. Just walking down the street.

D: What’s the worst part of being a photographer?

R: Being a photographer! Yeah! Everyone is a photographer. Especially now that there is digital photography. You go out and be like “yo what do you do?” and they’re like “ oh I’m a photographer.” I be like “yeah I bet.”

D: Do you fuck with digital photography?

R: Yeah. If I get a job that I’m not gonna need the pictures or they need the pictures right away I’ll shoot digital. I bring both cameras though. A film and digital and if I see something I really like I’ll shoot film. But um…yeah. You kinda have to shoot digital.

D: Any weird shit ever happen while you were on a shoot?

R: Um yeah. I used to shoot products for playgirl. The person that was helping me at the time…it was this vibrator we were photographing…and I don’t know but this shit shocked the shit out of her. It was pretty funny. Then there was like this walrus dildo.

D: A walrus dildo?

R: Yeah that shit was nasty.

D: What was your favorite shoot to be on?

R: I don’t know. I don’t really have a favorite. I like it when it’s really uncomfortable. When the shoot is really uncomfortable I secretly smile inside.

D: So tell me about your book.

R: Oh the book I just made. Um…I guess it’s a book. It’s kinda just like 10 or 15 pictures. I went to Tennessee a couple of years ago. I was actually going through negs looking for pictures for this other book I wanted to make. I found these three rolls of film, which had a bunch of good pictures so I figured I’ll put them together. I never scanned them before. I don’t know, every once in a while if I don’t shoot for a while I’ll just go through negs and see what I got just to do something. This book is kinda random, but it all sort of connects. I would say it’s kind of depressing. I felt Tennessee was a little depressing. I don’t know. I got good pictures out of it. It’s kinda gross though. Look at this…it’s a urinal. A group urinal where four dudes can piss together. Kinda weird. I guess that’s how they do it.

D: Do you travel a lot for your photography?

R: Yeah cause I’ve also been an assistant photographer for the past three years. I’ve pretty much traveled across the whole country. So I see a lot of stuff.

D: Dope!

R: Sometimes I take pictures and sometimes I don’t shoot shit.

D: Who do you assist?

R: Danielle Levitt. She shoots a lot of celebrities. She just came out with a book called “We are experienced: Teenagers across America”

D: Are you gonna try to get your book published?

R: This One? Nah, I probably just make a few copies and just send it to random places and see what happens.

D: You should try to sell it on the streets. D.I.Y. style and shit!!

R: I’ll probably try to send it to Dashwood. It’s this pretty popular bookstore. I kinda just want to make a few of them and have them accumulate and then make one big one. Then spend all my money and try to get it actually published. Self published. Made in China (laughs).

D: (Laughs)

weekend o'music

So this weekend was the weekend of sick shows. Friday night (July 18th) I caught Ninja Sonik, Knyfe Hyts, Red Dawn 2, Psychothriller, and Ray Contour at Death by Audio, which is one of the sickest venues I've been to yet!!! Free beer and rad music...What more do you need!!

Then saturday I took that dreaded long ride out to Coney Island to catch the Siren Festival. I have to say, I've been going to Siren for a couple of years now and this year was really lame. I mean I had a good time hanging out with my friends and getting wasted off of the $10-a-gallon pina coladas (Thanks for the extra shot of hennessey Jesse), but other than that the bands were kind of lame and the energy of the fans seemed really low this year. Beach House and Broken Social scene were good I guess.

Finally on sunday was the show I have been waiting for all summer... The Mad Descent/Fools gold summerstage show featuring Diplo,A-trak, and Santogold...
